Ford has announced the preliminary details of the new 7.3-liter V8 engine, which will debut in the F-250 and F350 as an option, and will eventually become standard in the F-550, F-600, F-650, F-750, F-53, F-59 and E-Series.
The Windsor-built gasoline unit features overhead valve architecture that helps it generate power low in the rev range, variable-displacement oil pump, piston cooling jets, extra-large main bearings and a forged steel crankshaft.

“The 7.3-liter is designed for maximum durability in the harshest environments, given that our customers live and work in these conditions every day”, said the manager for gasoline V8 engines, Joel Beltramo. “The engine has the largest displacement in its class and is designed to provide benefits in key areas like power, durability, ease of maintenance and total operating costs.”
With 7.3 liters in displacement, the V8 delivers 430 horsepower (436 PS / 321 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 475 pound-feet (644 Nm) of torque at 4,000 rpm, both of them best-in-class figures, according to Ford. The power unit will be hooked up to the 10-speed TorqShift automatic gearbox in all models except the F-650 and F-750, which will retain the heavy-duty 6-speed.
The engine joins the 6.2-liter V8 gasoline in the Super Duty lineup and the third-gen 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8.
A lesser version of the 7.3-liter V8 will become standard in the F-450 chassis cab, F-550, F-600, F-650, F-750, F-53 and F-59, as well as the upgraded E-Series. It will kick out 350 hp (355 PS / 261 kW) at 3,900 rpm and 468 lb-ft (635 Nm) of torque at 3,900 rpm.
